SENSELESS ILLEGAL REGIME IN FREE FALL

To hear unofficial Fiji Government spokesman Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum interviewed on radio is to hear a reasonable man driven to the point of distraction by unreasonable critics. To observe his actions as interim attorney-general is to witness the unacceptable face of a dictatorship.
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum sounds like a reasonable man. But his words are belied by his actions and those of the regime of which he is part. It is a regime that seized power at the point of a gun, that has beaten and jailed its critics and, in recent weeks, has waged war on the legal infrastructure Mr Sayed-Khaiyum is supposed to protect.
Fiji’s constitution has been overturned and its judges sacked because the Court of Appeal had the temerity to rule Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama’s government illegal. Censors have been put in newsrooms to ensure only positive reports about the government are published, and the Fiji Law Society has been shunted to one side.
From June 16, all lawyers who wish to continue working in Fiji will have to apply for practising certificates to a government employee – the chief registrar of the court – rather than to the society.
It was in defence of the last measure that Mr Sayed- Khaiyum most recently ventured on to the airwaves. According to him, the change was necessary to speed up the processing of outstanding complaints. Many had been on the law society’s books for years but little action had been taken, he said.
But to speed up the processing of complaints, one of which, perhaps not entirely coincidentally, is against him, it is not necessary to raid law society offices and take away confidential files. Nor is it necessary to make lawyers go cap in hand to the government for the right to continue plying their trade. Sidelining the law society is another way of concentrating power in the hands of the military dictatorship and its cronies. It is also a way of weakening one of the pillars on which democracy rests – the rule of law.
As New Zealand Law Society president John Marshall has pointed out, an independent legal profession is a vital element of the rule of law. Lawyers represent individuals in claims against the state and defend them in criminal cases brought by the state. They cannot function effectively if they are beholden to that state for their jobs.
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum and Commodore Bainimarama appear genuinely to believe they are acting in Fiji’s best interests. How they could be so deluded is a mystery.
Fiji’s international reputation is in tatters. It has been suspended from the Pacific Islands Forum and its peacekeepers are not wanted for any new United Nations missions. The economy is shrinking at an alarming rate.
Reserve Bank governor Savenaca Narube was removed from office last month after saying it was collapsing. And the European Union has cancelled a $40 million grant to the sugar industry because the regime has reneged on its promise to hold elections this year.

The military regime has done inestimable damage to Fiji. Its leaders need to come to their senses before they do even more harm. What they are doing is not reasonable, it is not sensible and it is not in Fiji’s best interests.

One of the best commentaries yet. There are many reasonable ideas being touted by a regime full of unreasonable personalities.

What the IG is doing is unreasonable and they know it..

That is why it wont change.

  2. this is navoha Says:

The captain(world bank, asian development bank,IMF & USA) has lost the plot and abandon the ship. The crew(IG & cronies) has taken over & told to improvise in order to sustain the damage.

The script to act upon is no longer. However a new script in Chinese is far worse to comprehend especially with the incompetent spokesman MR aaha.
However a saviour(Mr Ah koi) has risen to decode it & further manipulate & compound the existing web of lies & confusion in the IG.

With a rudderless ship without a Captain & guided by deceptive chinese instruction & sailing into unknown territory, facing stormy & unpredicatable economic weather conditions. All i can say the ship is heading towards a reef with major collatarel damage & the end of our beloved land.

Kai Viti was driving home from work one afternoon when he was stopped at
a police roadblock. “What happening?” he asked one of policemen.
“Mob of Taukei have Bainimarama & some of his friends trapped in a house and they’ve dousted it with petrol and are threatening to set it alight unless their demands are met”. ‘So what’s the roadblock about – that’s in Suva – not here?” he inquired. “Teleni’s told us to ask the rest of the public for donations – will you contribute?”. “Sure the man replied – put me down for 2 litres”.

    Bauhaus.
