Australia withdraws funding from Fiji’s election office
Posted at 22:00 on 29 May, 2009 UTC
Australia has withdrawn funding for a key position in Fiji’s elections office.
The position of Supervisor of Elections has been made redundant following the cancellation of the constitution last month.
The Australian Government formally notified Fiji’s Public Service Commission on May 13 that it has stopped salary supplementation support for the position.
The Australian High Commission in Fiji says the government made the decision after Fiji’s President abrogated the 1997 Constitution and revoked all constitutionally appointed positions.
This includes the supervisor’s role.
The interim Fiji Government says elections will not be held until as late as 2014.
Australia says it remains willing to provide considerable assistance with elections preparations in Fiji.
Btu this is provided the Fiji Government is able to demonstrate a genuine commitment towards free and fair elections at an early date.

We can hope that all international and regional organisations and donors will take a firmer position on the Cassava Frank’s dirt bag dictatorship. Not a single cent in aid, closure and relocation of all UN and EU offices would be a good start. Freezing of overseas accounts held by the junta and their cronies, tightening of travel ban and travel advisories, disinvestment in Air Pacific etc etc. This regime can be brought down with the help of the international community.

Felicity can now go fulltime on YouTube!

Thank you, Australia for yr consistency against this regime. You give us hope with every such move!

    Nail the man!!!!!

Cone on guys, the position of Supervisor of Elections had already been disestablished after the President abrogated the Constitution. Remember, the election won’t be held until 2014, thus there was no need for that position.

Since Australia does not give any direct aid to the Fiji regime, they had agreed to fund the Supervisor of Election’s salary and few other election related projects.

So what is the big deal here – “THE HANDOUTS HAVE DWINDLED FOR THE OLE OINK, NO BUSFARE, PAIDA!”

Australia seem to love these announcements – just like the one about the UN not using any Fijian peacekeepers after the Australian PM had lobbied for it.

…as if this was some new initiative on the part of the Australian government. Has Michael Field written a piece on this one yet?

  8. LUVfiji Says:

    Thanks Budhau!

    Of course, y’re right.

Where then is felicity now? And what happens to that Office? Will the junta keep it running and pretend they seriously want an Election?

  9. mando Says:

Close all doors and we all go back to the village to plant tavioka. Let’s see where the juntas will end in. Bet somebody’s ass will open up to him.
