Fiji denied $41.3 million sugar hit

Article from: Agence France-Presse
THE European Commission has cancelled a grant worth more than $US31 million ($41.3 million) to Fiji in a sign of growing international impatience at the military regime’s refusal to hold elections.

The executive arm of the European Union said the 2009 grant to help Fiji’s struggling sugar sector was being cancelled “in the absence of any indications that a legitimate government will be in place in 2009”.

The annual disbursements have been suspended since military leader Frank Bainimarama took power in a bloodless coup in 2006, and has resisted pressure to restore democracy.

Last month, the military regime tightened its grip on power leading to its suspension from the Pacific Islands Forum, a regional bloc that represents the common interests of regional island nations.

The United States and Fiji’s most affluent near neighbours, Australia and New Zealand, have also imposed targeted sanctions.

The European Commission has warned that the actions of the military regime are unacceptable and that assistance grants would not resume without a return to democracy.

Mr Bainimarama toppled the elected government of Laisenia Qarase in December 2006, accusing it of corruption and unfairly favouring the indigenous Fijian majority over the minority ethnic Indian population.

He sees Fiji as beset by divisions between the Fijians and Indians and has vowed to reform the electoral system before holding elections.

This article says Bhainimarama ‘toppled’ the elected Government of Laisenia Qarase which we all know is incorrect. The Pig in fact hijacked the elected Government of Prime Minister Qarase. FACT.

Now that the funding has been denied & the Pigs blood pressure soars because he’s lost face in the most public way, will the thought, if he’s capable of such a task that involves a sane mind, cross his mind if he woulda, coulda, shoulda not been influenced and used by more devious pigsters than himself  be just another no ghare but happy as a pig in shit naval personnel?

Politics is certainly not for the porcine, especially Voreqe Bhainimarama who failed Fiji Junior three times and believes he can still lay claim to a modicum of relevancy

The idea is that even if he thinks (?) he can run a country, from the moment he hijacked the legally elected Government of the Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase by the barrel of a gun he sealed his own irrelevant fate and  his unintelligible utterances are not paid any more attention than if they were bulbul flatulence

This is an important move by the EU. But the poor farmers will be affected, Fiji’s economy crippled, the interim regime will have high blood pressure. I only hope that common sense will prevail. The answer to the problem of racial divide is not reform of the Voting System but the education of all citizens to value and respect each other.

evrybody watch.. he will come back wherever the fuck he is and will start to blame NZ and Australia for the EU issue.. watch it guys….

  3. Budhau Says:

Kingrat, you don’t get it, do you – the EU had announced in 2007 that they cut this money. Since the fund is allocated on a annual basis, they have to make an announcement once every year. That is why the announcement now.
Everyone new that this announcement was coming.

BTW – some of these blogs go around making these announcements as if there was some new sanction or something. LIke few weeks ago there was this announcement that UN just announced that there will be no more peacekeepers – that announcement was made late last year.

“THE European Commission has cancelled a grant worth more than $US31 million” – as if this is something new.

  7. Truth Says:

Even if the farmers complain; nothing EU can do about it so the onus is Bainimarama’s and his happy junta. And if Voreqe and his band of happy thieves could not care less for Fiji farmers why should the EU make Fiji economy their burden. Sa lailai tu na veisayai vuravura e gadreva na veivuke?

  8. Cama Says:

Its getting worse than what they think but they will play down everything like what Budhau has said.

Aiyarse commented on the news this morning and telling the sugar farmers that they should not rely on overseas donors in light of the news from EU.

Fijis future looks bleaker than ever now. we could have sustain this world economic recession if it was not for the coup so we are witnessing the pros and cos of the coup.
