From Fijilive today
The Fiji military should accept full responsibility for what’s happening in Fiji, says a Suva lawyer.
Rajendra Chaudhry, the son of former Prime Minister and interim Finance Minister Mahendra Chaudhry, said if the military is kept in check then Fiji would not have coups.
He adds that military commander Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama should also take responsibility for the situation the country is in instead of putting blame on past leaders.
Chaudhry made the comments in reaction to Bainimarama’s statement at the public forum on the draft People’s Charter in Lautoka on Tuesday.
Bainimarama explained the dire situation Fiji is in while highlighting the failures of many political leaders, particularly in the past two decades, to provide good governance.
“He should stop criticising past leaders because none of the leaders have staged a coup,” Chaudhry told Fijilive.
Chaudhry said the country had great leaders since Independence 38 years ago like Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, Siddiq Koya, Ratu Sir Penaia Ganilau, A.D Patel, Ratu Sir George Cakobau, Dr Timoci Bavadra and Mahendra Chaudhry.
He even acknowledged the contribution of Jai Ram Reddy, the former leader of the National Federation Party, rival of the Fiji Labour Party led by his father.
“Reddy negotiated Fiji’s current Constitution and had the mandate of the ethnic Indians to do so,” he said.
Chaudhry said Bainimarama should back his statements with facts and figures.
“He is not being well advised,” he said.
He also called on the military and police to stay away from the Charter consultation process because it could be intimidating to members of the public.
Bainimarama has yet to comment on the matter.
