|The Fiji Cane Growers Association is calling for the removal of interim Sugar minister Mahendra Chaudhry saying his attempt to defer the 2009 elections will spell doom for farmers. In a statement this afternoon, FCGA general secretary Bala Dass said Chaudhry should find aid worth $350million, which was earmarked by the European Union.
“….on April 18 last year, Chaudhry was part of a 3-member interim Cabinet team that went to Brussels and made a commitment before the EU council. “But since then he has consistently opposed any calls or commitments made by interim PM Voreqe Bainimarama to the Forum leaders last year to hold elections by March 2009,” Dass said.
Dass said Chaudhry (being the general secretary of the National Farmers Union) does not care how farmers and their families will survive next year. The EU Troika Mission confirmed that the release of the financial grant for 2008, will depend on the interim regime’s desire to fulfill its commitments to hold general elections by March 2009.
