Compare this crook to Semesa Karavaki?

Constitutional Offices Commission Chairman Rishi Ram says he has no knowledge of reports that Fiji’s newly-appointed Supervisor of Elections Dr Maurice Coughlan was disbarred from practising law in NZ for misconduct.

Ram told Fijilive that he would have to verify the facts with Dr Coughlan before drawing any conclusion on the matter.

His reaction comes after reports surfaced that Dr Coughlan was disbarred from practising law in 1985 in relation to a personal commercial transaction. He was readmitted to the NZ bar in 2002.

“I will have to talk to him first. We have yet to verify all the facts from him,” Ram said.

“If the matter is serious then we will have to look at other candidates for the job.”

Ram said if this happened then it would take more time to appoint someone new.

“It was already hard finding one,” he told Fijilive.

The COC meets on Monday to discuss the matter.

“I will put the matter in the meeting on Monday and see how we progress from there,” he said.

My gut feeling is this is a deliberate act to fidn excuse for delaying a head of the Election Commission and thus delay the proposed March 09 General Election.

Dina Kuts: This appears to be a delaying tactic. Giving the impression that they are setting things ready for the election but unfortunately this was overlooked..so will have to find another one but ” It was already hard finding one”…hence the delay. How could they have missed the 11 years + missing from his CV?? of practicing law. Even a 3rd former can detect and ask the question what happened in those 11 years. Prominent cases he took and won during those years and ask his referees etc. How could they miss that. ??? I agree with the concusion of the above. More incredibitliy to COC, PSC and his street sweeper chairman, and iIG. Pathetic.

Send home the peace keeping forces to Fiji , to stop the I G being financed and down size the Military or abolish it altogether , at least for 5 or 10 years until all the dead wood is gotten rid of .

The complete incompetence & ignorance of the ig is incredible, seems like anyone who can’t make a living overseas can talk the talk and worm their way into a high paying job with the ig.

Their attitude is probably that it’s not their money so they’ll hire whoever they want regardless.

    HERALD WEEKLY ISSUE 336 : 06 JANUARY 2007

Letter to the Editor : You should have come to Makea meeting

Dear Editor – It is a pity that Matapo Oti and his siblings did not come to our meeting on the 14th October 2006 at the Manihiki hall
At that meeting they would have known that to get to the Makea Title, there is a protocol that needed to be followed through first before going to the courts. The two paragraphs below were already printed in the papers so I thought that it would be good to have it printed again.
The meeting was chaired by cultural and islands expert Pastor Ngarima George and addressed by Dr. Maurice Coughlan a New Zealand based barrister and former Pacific customary, constitutional and resource law practitioner as to the former Court decisions in Rarotonga in 1990’s DENYING previous applicants the title of Ariki.
These Court hearings confirmed the need to initiate open transparent and democratic processes by the families to determine the Ariki in an appropriate and commonly accepted way rather than APPEALING TO THE COURT.
And also as advised by Pastor Ngarima George about the protocol that needed to be followed regarding the Makea title, we have now spoken to Minister Tom Marsters (who had been elected to be the spokesperson to sort out this Makea title) requesting a meeting with both TePatuakino’s families and Putua Ariki’s families to sort out this title before July 2007 celebrations.
Minister Tom Marsters has agreed to call a meeting by January or February 07 next year due to the Christmas festival coming up soon.
This is the reason why we haven’t taken this to court ourselves as it would have been a waste of money to pay for the lawyer as this protocol needs to be followed first.
So to Matapo and his families, I would rather we all get together and wait for Minister Tom Marsters to call a meeting for both TePatuakino and Putua Ariki’s families and then everyone can have their say at that meeting.
But if you still want to go ahead with your case before we have the meeting then go ahead but it will be a lost case.
I would also like to say that if everyone has been touched by our Heavenly father and Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, good things happen to them and even though it has been a long wait, everything happens for a reason.
All I can say is that the ancestors on the other side have been waiting patiently to be acknowledged again with lots of signs and crying. I do know this as I have been made to cry with them too.
May they all rest in peace once everything has been finalised.
    God Bless us all.

Dina Kuts, this is the same reasoning put forward on TV last nite by transparency international (Fiji).
TI’s answer to counter this attempted delay is to request Australia to send elections experts to help Fiji, since Aust. has just copleted a very free and fair election.

Sa matai lelevu dina na nodratou via lawaki tiko na i lala butabutako qo.Maybe they knew all along but thought we were idiots like them and not find out about the disbarrment, magaitinadratou.

  10. Peace Pipe Says:

First of all how can we have this puppet unprofessional unkempt man with long manes Rishi Ram holding such an important post. He does not even speak very well. His lacks intellect as well as he said there was no one qualified locally to take up the job of supervisor. So the new appointee was his right choice for the job. Its a reflection of his incompetence. I hope this would not add the days or months to the ongoing elections deadline. This new appointee would be no different to the whole lot in the ig who are there illegally anyway so they are all birds of a feather flocking together.

  11. LUVfiji Says:

    @PeacePipe

Good one! Have u forgotten though that he is there for/with the IG. They’re all the same. Just like the one he is working with in the Electoral Commission – Shah whats his name? Oileiiiiiiiii…

As NP indicated above, we should ask Australia and NZ to step in and help out with the process. With the lack of expertise within their ranks, they wont be able to run an election. But lets remain optimistic about going to the polls 2009!

An after thought – May be vore might want to take it on as well! Dou ia!!

    Maurice Coughlan’s Services Not Required

    Publish date/time: 22/04/2008 [14:32]

The Constitutional Offices Commission has decided that Dr Maurice Coughlan will not be permitted to continue as the Supervisor of Elections.

Speaking on behalf of the Constitutional Offices Commission after the three ccmmissioners met this morning, lawyer Gavin O’Driscoll said they were in the process of informing Dr Coughlan of the decision based on the non-disclosure of his disbarment in 1992.

O’Driscoll also confirmed that the second candidate shortlisted will now be approached to take up the post of Supervisor of Elections. He stressed that they would not repeat their mistake and would conduct a thorough background check.

It was also confirmed that Dr Coughlan informed the members of the Constitutional Offices Commission that he did not wish to go as far as the reasons behind his not revealing that he was disbarred during the interview.

  17. FijiGirl Says:

Good point Kutu, Ozone et al – this COULD be another delaying tactic.

Why can’t they just call up local former Supervisors of Elections like, oh, I don’t know … Jon Apted? He’s competent, experienced, close at hand – perhaps they don’t want to call on him because they know they can’t corrupt him, unlike a dodgy foreign lawyer.

Let’s see, what will be their next step… I know, they’ll appoint someone from China, or the Sudan, or Bosnia, or Zimbabwe, or perhaps Burma, or the Punjab…

I think the last REALLY competent foreign professional sent to Fiji shores was Police Commissioner Andrew Hughes, remember him? What a breath of fresh air that man was after that idiot Savua.

Vore chased Hughes out because he wasn’t having any of Vore’s nonsense, and now Hughes has a well-deserved respected position at the UN.

We are left with a bunch of power-hungry doces and fly-by-niters who can’t get a job elsewhere.

Let’s make sure these elections happen so we can get rid of the nutcases.

    God bless Fiji

Wow, what a con game by Mahen Chodo and his Gang. The direction to Risi Ram was “hire a white guy” with questionable background but make sure to have an Indo waiting in the wing? As soon as the white guy is removed everyone will be relieved to have a new applicant appointed for the vacant post, especially since the election is very near?

  20. Jose Says:

Indeginous Fijians need to rise up and take control of our country. We need a clean up campaign of our own government and our own land to rid this government of every alien so that we control what is our God given right looking to God alone as our guide living by God’s Law and throw out human rights which was made to make null and void the law of God. All you preachers, men and women of God rise up and do what you are annointed and called to do in your own land for God and His people. The aliens can go back to where they come from if they don’t like it here. We don’t need to be like the rest of the world we just need to be what God wants us to be and how he wants us to live. Rise up people, rise up. All you preachers rise up and gather up all your flocks. rally together in masses and pray. The Victory is ours the battle is the Lord’s” 11 Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from Heaven, and will forgive their sin and will heal their land”. This is His promise. I’s Aye and Amen. This is a war between good and evil, the abominations are rampant in our country. We need God to intervene.

  21. OYZ Says:

VInaka Jose. That is what is required. We need to take control of our country.

  22. Jose Says:

Yes, OYZ. This is our country, our land. And we are God’s people. There is only one war in this world and that is between Good and evil. Evil and abominations are rampant in our land. Aliens in govt now and previous making decisions for God’s people contrary to Godly principles. Resist the devil and it will flee. Our people everywhere should rally together in masses, repent, fast and pray and and seek God’s face for intervention and guidance. God hears the prayers of His people and what He says He will do, it is sure. Our church leaders need to rise up now and lead mass rallys in fasting and prayers seeking God’s intervention.
