A novel about warfare called “Catch 22″ gave the world a new word – SNAFU.
It stands for “Situation normal, all f***ed up.” If there isa better word
in the English language to describe what Fiji’s dictator Frank Bainimarama
has
created in our country, I would like to hear it. Everywhere you look in
the Fiji that has had I8 months of Bainimarama’s rule it’s SNAFU. If
Bainimarama was ever any good in his military role, and I have heard that
question debated often enough, he’s certainly a complete and utter failure
in his attempt to command the civilian population of Fiji.
Remember back to the coup and how it divided Fiji right down the middle. I
think it would be fair to say that at that point Bainimarama might have had
50% of the people strongly opposing him, 25% on side and the other 25%
undecided. Today those figures are more likely to read, respectively, 75%
(against), 10% (in favour) and 15% (wondering what the f**k is going to
happen next). And those estimates are deliberately generous!
Let’s face the central fact honestly and realistically: In the eyes of
both people in Fiji and elsewhere, when Bainimarama pulled his coup he had
his chance to carry out what he said he was going to carry out, but he
blew it, big time.
Sure, his coup was legally and morally as wrong as you can get. However back
then he gave his justifications (corruption, clean-up etc.) and put on a
display of getting on with it. He fooled quite a few people. It’s a fact
that a lot of people listened and a lot of people believed him. But as the
months wore on, he didn’t deliver. And by then other factors had come into
play: gross human rights abuses, the economic downslide, loss of jobs, a
rise in crime, the overt manipulation of the judiciary, and so on. That’s
when the pendulum of potential public support began to swing sharply
against the dictator. And it continues to swing.
To put it in a nutshell, Bainimarama just doesn’t have what it takes to
being a nation leader. He doesn’t have what it takes to be even the patch
on the pants of someone who is leading a nation. To be a national leader,
to successfully steer your country on a particular course, you need to be
mentally and intellectually competent, a good communicator, to have
diplomatic skills of a high order, and you need to take the people with
you by demonstrating a high degree of governance and transparency. By any
measurement known to the modern world, Bainimarama has demonstrated very
convincingly that none of these essential capabilities belong to him.
And equally importantly for a small island state like Fiji, a national
leader has to remember that you are living in a global village, and as one
of the poorer, least developed inhabitants of that village, you need to
have the bigger, stronger inhabitants on your side, especially the ones
that happen to live next door. But that is not possible if a leader,
albeit a self-proclaimed “interim” leader, is governed by his heart rather
than his head and instead of cultivating his neighbours he goes out of his
way to antagonise them.
Thanks to Frank, Fiji is regarded as a pariah state, a state which has
abandoned the rule of law and replaced it with a dictatorship in all but
name. The illegal arbitrary expulsions, arrests and deportations of New
Zealand and Australian expatriates on bogus grounds has not only put Fiji
right offside with the governments of the citizens involved, but also
seriously jeopardise long-standing cordial relationships that have been of
benefit to Fiji in the past and which Fiji will need more than ever when
it gets the opportunity to start rebuilding her democracy. To put it
bluntly, Frank’s attributes as a leader who can advance Fiji’s national
interests on the international stage are less than zero.
Whichever way you like look at it, in terms of being the leader of a
country, on both the domestic front and the international front, Frank has
proved himself to be a spectacular all-round failure. All he has managed
to do over the past 18 months is to put Fiji in a SNAFU category all of
its own.

I have just read the greatest news about Fiji for a long time.
hairyarse has been refused entry to the USA on his way to Vienna.
Now he knows how his victims and their families must feel.
Alleluia!
US ‘refuses entry’ to Fiji A-G
09 MAY 2008
Fiji’s interim Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum was not allowed entry into the US on his way to a UN conference in Vienna, Austria, according to the AG’s Chamber.
And the AG’s spokeswoman Brenda Ragi says Sayed-Khaiyum today lodged a complaint to the UN Secretary General in respect of the refusal of the US Embassy to grant a transit visa to attend the conference.
In a statement, the AG said he “accepts that whilst the US, like any other country, has the right to refuse entry or deport non-citizens, member States of the UN cannot and should not be stopped from fully exercising their right to participate in UN matters.
“After all, all States in the UN are equal sovereigns.”
The US Embassy in Suva imposed visa sanctions on members of the interim Government and the military following the 2006 overthrow of the Qarase Government.
The embassy says that the”post-coup US visa sanctions remain in place, including on Ministers of the interim Government”.
It adds that the US does not comment on individual visa cases.
Sayed-Khaiyum left the country two days ago to attend the conference for signatories to the United Nations Convention against Corruption.
He said his trip opens up the potential of getting assistance for the anti-corruption unit in Fiji.
He said the Government under interim Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama recently rectified the UN Convention.

EFT – Good on You – Vinaka
You know it still defies imagination how these illegal coupsters think they can get away with what they are doing to Fiji – I’ve been saying this on this site that they made a very bad enemy in Andrew Huges by threatening his family, In Larry Dingle by threatening him – remember that really snide remark by the most unintelligent man in Fiji voreqe for Larry Dingle to take his running shoes up to the barracks. In Michael Green the former NZ High Commissioner that he expelled in June last year, Now they’re threatening the Australian High Commissioner.
How on earth do they expect to get any assistance from the countries these gentlemen come from when they treat them like the common thieves and murderers that they the illegal coupsters are?
The world is watching you illegal coupsters – you may think you’re big fish in Fiji (sit & spin sara vakaukaua on that) but you’re a bloody blind mullett in the big world.
May 9, 2008 at 10:55 pm
@ eFT – Vinaka vaka levu sara! That is the best news I’ve heard all day.
Why the heck Yippee Ai-yay needs to fly via the US en route to Vienna (it’s easier via Seoul) is anyone’s guess.
Let’s keep writing messages of support to the embassies in Suva for their sanctions on this illegal regime. Thank you USA, for protecting life, liberty and Democracy!
As for you, Yippee Ai-yay – I believe the phrase goes something like “them chickens is coming home to roost”…
God bless Fiji

The figures you quoted for and against are just about right if the response Frank got at tonight’s Soweto Gospel concert in Suva is any guide.
Just like at the Marist sevens when the announcer had to ask the crowd to applaud the Pig three times before he got a half-hearted clap from a handful of uncomfortable patrons, Frank again under-whelmed the Fiji public tonight. Vatanitawake had to give up in embarrassment after two introductions of the Pig met with only aimless applause from a couple of isolated sections of the crowd.
As we all know, Frank lives in his own private world that has practically no connection with real life. But every now and again, like tonight, reality comes down on him so hard and unambiguously that it is impossible for him to explain it away in his usual absurd, ass-backwards, Freudian-rationalization, illogic! So suck it up Pig – people don’t hate you because of the SDL’s failures, or the International Community’s misunderstandings, or the Media’s mistakes. No – they hate you for yourself, and your very own, homegrown, no-brain SNAFU that you are endlessly inflicting on this nation and its people!

It’s not only aubatinuku-N & LUVfiji who oppose the Illegal Regime. As of late Friday night, note well the following:
AGAINST
REWA, NAITASIRI, NAMOSI, CAKAUDROVE, BA, TAILEVU, RA, LOMAIVITI, NADROGA/NAVOSA (REJECT GCC/STILL DEBATING NCBBF) – 9
FOR
SERUA AND KADAVU HAVE MADE PUBLIC STATEMENTS SUPPORTING THE ILLEGAL REGIME, THOUGH KADAVU HAVE YET TO MEET. – 2
STILL OUT
YET TO ANNOUNCE: LAU, BUA, MACUATA AND ROTUMA – 4
HOW MANY PROVINCES FOR AND HOW MANY AGAINST NOT TO MENTION THE POPULATION COUNT WITHIN THOSE PROVINCES. YOU DO THE MATH!
Sorry for the all caps folks, but some people need help reading the writing on the wall.
Horrible questions for Frank to contemplate:
1. How many soldiers in uniform identify more with their respective provinces than the bull dust position I’ve been feeding them?
2. Is it at all possible they might believe and identify more with their chiefs and kinsmen, rather than what me and Mahen Uncle tell them?

Sa vakamadua na nodrau vosavosa tiko ga o Finau Tabakaucoro kei Josateki Nawalowalo.

Is the Soqosoqo Vakamarama i Viti aware of what she is doing, surely they should sack her as enough provinces have renounced their team effort.
JN – even after Cakaudrove banned them still braying he wants to hear it from the Turaga Tui Cakau himself. I’ve actually gotten to the point where I am embarrased for them.

Fiji is the laughing stock of the world for having such an idiotic loser as its iPM albeit illegally self appointed. The problem is his undernourished braincells has not fully grown to be able to make intelligible comments and statements and is causing Fiji huge embarassment and consequently a big SNAFU. We all know he erred big time in this coup but the problem is his arrogant megalomaniac narcissist ways are preventing him doing the right thing i.e. to give up the losing battle. He and his cahoots are too deep in it to do so.
Today has been a good day for us anti-ig with all the bad news for the ig mounting up and giving them a real bad time. Lets keep the flame burning till the ig people are kicked out into oblivion.
May 10, 2008 at 9:34 am
@EnufD – fortunately for us the Caucau’s were on the receiving end of the wrong side of the stick. Bau dua tale tokaga na opportunist ‘qori !
But isnt it pathetic how these coupsters cannot easily accept defeat. Finau Tabakaucoro’s comment claiming the SDL and the Meths had worked against the iIG. Hell, they simply just dont get it. The people know exactly what they want !
Io sa dina… vinaka vakalevu Lomaiviti. But did I hear right about the Nadroga/Navosa meeting? If so, its quite obvious where the ncbbf and gcc reform appear on their agenda – the last item of the Miscellaneous!

I forgot to thank Lomaiviti and Cakaudrove for their stand on rejecting the charter farter and GCC recommendations. It shows the people’s resolve to follow the rule of law and the united stand of the Fijians against something that is detrimental to them. It is a good sign when the Fijian are united in their stand against a repressive regime. It show that when the Fijians are united they will be able to reclaim their rights, just as they did in the last 2 elections. It can be done again this time.
I dont know where Serua is coming from by accepting the charter and GCC changes. As for Kadavu I know $2 Nawalowalo is a minority voice of that province and he is a diehard apologist opportunist. What about Lau, Bua and Macuata? How are they going to swing? Does anyone have any idea? The more the rejection of the charter and GCC changes and unity amongst Fijians the quicker we get these thugs out of our faces and return the country to sanity, normality and peace progress and prosperity through the right process and not this bullshit smokescreen escape plan charter farter.
May 10, 2008 at 2:28 pm
BTW, where is hairyarse?
Is he Fiji or has he gone to the conference by Korean air over the North Pole?
I have a gut feeling that this is another stunt that chaudhry’s junta is pulling to try to get some sympathetic publicity for the bunch of losers. I note that all the news outlets have reported the press release unchallenged.
It could also be a stunt to pick a fight with the USA and maybe expel their ambassador.
What stupid hairyarse can’t understand is that he and his criminal associates are not welcome in the USA [ or the rest of the free world ].
I loved the story above about bananasinpyjamas being ignored by the crowd at a concert. Whilst I detest booing as a way of showing disapproval, in bananasinpyjamas’ case I think it would be very appropriate.

@Iceman – say Amen my brother! Get a load of this update from the Fiji Times at 3.15pm today. So now we revise the scoresheet and Nadroga is dirmly in the against column.
Furthermore Nawalowalo is being berated by the Turaga Ka Levu for abusing their vi tauvutaki relationship. I used to be embarassed by him and Finau, now I’m just disgusted. To all my relatives in Kadavu – please stop this man before you lose all respect amonst the chiefs of Burebasaga.
Frank, good free advice naita- call of your dogs now!!! They are really fucking you up bigtime.

Na Ka Levu says regime abuses channels of Fijian protocol
Saturday, May 10, 2008
Update: 3.15pm The chairman of the Nadroga Navosa Provincial Council today flatly repudiated the assessment of GCC taskforce head, Ratu Josateki Nawalowalo.
Ratu Sakiusa Makutu described Ratu Josatekis appraisal as a gross perversion of truth, misguided, and deception at the highest possible level.
The interim Government and indeed, it’s taskforce is deliberately abusing normal channels of traditional Fijian protocol, Ratu Sakiusa said.
The Nadroga/Navosa Provincial Council was traditionally obligated to accept the taskforce because of the historic bloodties and alliances, but their acceptance must not be misconstrued as approval or support.
In fact their attendance and subsequent presentation at the Provincial Council meeting was barely tolerated and indeed was not accepted nor approved of in the strongest possible terms.
Ratu Sakiusa said as the sole summoning authority, he had no intention of calling a ‘Nolevu’ or Bose vanua for this purpose and will only do so as he saw it fit.
May 10, 2008 at 6:17 pm
hairyarse is off to a UN conference on corruption.
He must be the guest speaker!
Imagine the stories he could tell about chodopu$$ deceiving people so he could amass a fortune.
The audience would be captivated by his recounts of bananasinpyjamas’ theft from the regimental fund.
In conclusion, he could leave them spellbound with his own efforts at stacking the judicary.
Hopefully, Andrew Hughes would be in the audience and he would step forward to arrest him.

Police guard embassies
http://www.sun.com.fj/Fiji_newspaper/Index/index.htm
A police mobile division has been dispatched to guard the main entrance to the Australian High Commission following a threat made to top envoy James Batley on Wednesday.
Media Liaison officer Atunaisa Sokomuri said police officers were currently manning the main gate of the High Commission and would continue to do so until fears for the High Commissioner and his familys safety were erased.
Mr Sokomuri also said the taxi driver who had picked up the passenger who gave him the letter to deliver to the gates of the High Commission has been questioned and released.
The driver was brought in for questioning and has been released, he said.
He claims he doesnt know anything other than picking up the passenger and later dropping him off at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital.
He said the driver was not able to identify the man but told police the passenger wore a Bula shirt and caught the cab from the Kundan Singh supermarket further up the road from the High Commission. The man is understood to have asked the driver to give the letter to the security guard at the High Commission.
The High Commission said the threat appeared to be politically-motivated, by a person or persons who objected to the Australian governments current policy on Fiji. It said neither the High Commission nor the Australian Government would be intimidated by threats.
Meanwhile, in light of the threat to the Australian High Commissioner, police have beefed up security at all the High Commissions in Suva.Mr Sokomuri confirmed that personnel were patrolling the areas where all High Commissions were located and also the residence of all country diplomats.
Officers from the Special Branch have been advised to carry out constant patrolling around all the High Commissions and also for diplomats residences, he said.
Senior Government officials met with the Mr Batley yesterday afternoon regarding the threat made against him.
But they remained tightlipped on what was discussed at the meeting.
Meanwhile, the Dean of the Diplomatic Corp has condemned the threat made against the head of a diplomatic mission and labelled the action as unfortunate.
Two copies of an anonymous written threat were delivered to the Australian High Commission early Wednesday evening with the threat directed primarily at the High Commissioner James Batley.
Spokesperson for the Dean, Mac Kamina said the incident was unfortunate and it was really shocking to know that people had to go to such extent to get publicity. Mr Kamina said to have a persons human rights abused to such magnitude was uncalled for and should not be tolerated.
It is indeed unfortunate that people have to go this far and to threaten a head of a diplomatic mission is just way out of line, Mr Kamina said.
He said all members of diplomatic missions would never involve themselves in local politics as guided by the Vienna Convention.
And if they had to make any political comments regarding what is going on in their host country, they would have to be very cautious.
It seems like the threat made against the High Commissioner of Australia was somehow politically motivated and for him to be made a target because of the current situation in Fiji is very unfortunate, Mr Kamina said.
He said security was paramount right now for all high commissions in Suva and all missions were relying heavily on their host country to provide the reliable security that is needed.
The British High Commission has called the threat as a very worrying development.
Media Liaison officer Vineeta Nand confirmed the United Kingdoms continuing support for Mr Batley and his staff and applauded the interim Prime Ministers response and assurance on the matter.
The United Kingdom will continue to support the High Commissioner and his staff in whatever way possible, she said.
It is however encouraging that the interim Prime Ministers office quickly condemned the threat to Mr Batley and assured the diplomatic community that their security and safety are paramount.
The current Dean of the Diplomatic Corp is Marshall Islands Ambassador to Fiji Amatlain Kabua.

The resistance movement now needs to move from cyberspace to the streets. Everybody opposed to the takeover needs an outlet to show their objection.
Everyone irrespective of age, race or political affiliation should be encouraged to Tag all government property with the letters FF (Free Fiji). This could be written in pen on letters to the government, tagged in spray paint on the doors of unattended government vehicles or on Government buildings. Villages that object to the regime could paint a ring of trees around the village with the logo.
It would take very little for a few people to casually mention this form of objection and start a revolution.

Barafen – vandalism campaign? Your best bet to start is students and street kids. They are least likely to get caught (they can melt into crowds better than adults) and they can get word around faster than electricity.
The ‘unintended consequence’ of this is that you would be teaching our young that vandalism is okay, and the respectable granny in me agrees with LUVFiji in another posting – perhaps that’s a road we don’t want to go down.
Then again, this iIG is taking us down an even worse road ….
