THE PEN IS TRULY MIGHTIER THAN THE SWORD OR GUNS IN OUR CASE

Net power rocks Malaysia’s rulers

Charmaine Hon | March 13, 2008

THE internet played a key role in the outcome of last weekend’s stunning Malaysian general election results.

Voters flocked to alternative online news sites and blogs, rejecting government friendly mainstream media.

The results of the March 8 election shocked the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition, with its position in the national parliament reduced from 91 per cent of available seats to 63 per cent.

Gayathry Venkiteswaran, executive director of Malaysia’s Centre for Independent Journalism, believes online activists and bloggers helped stimulate civil activism during the election by highlighting corruption through the internet and text messages.

That led to a new level of activism, which was apparent at recent rallies by the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections and the Hindu Rights Action Force.

“It’s given people a sense to be brave,” she said.

The media in Malaysia is strictly controlled through two instruments: the law and corporate political collusion, she said.

Print media are required to apply for publishing licences annually under the Printing Presses and Publications Act, and publications that have been critical of the Government have had licenses withdrawn. Under the act, companies that have their licences taken away cannot contest the decision in court.

And friends of government ministers are given preference in the acquisition of broadcasting licences, Ms Venkiteswaran said.

The Star, a leading English-language daily, is owned by Huaren Holdings. That is the investment arm of the Malaysian Chinese Association, the Chinese division of BN.

Media Prima, which also has ties with BN, owns five television stations, at least four daily newspapers and two radio stations.

Since 1999, Malaysia has had an online news portal called Malaysiakini (Malaysiakini.com). It is Malaysia’s most prominent alternative news portal and was the only media outlet providing live coverage of the election results on polling day.

In contrast, the mainstream print media waited until the Electoral Commission released its official statement before announcing BN had won by a simple majority, several hours after the results became clear.

Ms Venkiteswaran suggested the mainstream media held back the results on purpose. She said that in previous elections the results were usually reported by 2am, but this year the news of BN’s unexpected loss of seats was reported close to dawn, and its coverage mainly focused on states where the BN did well.

The Malaysiakini portal usually operates on a subscription basis but on March 4, four days before the election, it allowed free access for a week.

“We hope that voters will be able to access independent news so that they can make an informed decision on polling day,” Malaysiakini chief executive Premesh Chandran said when announcing the decision to open up the site. Malaysiakini reverted to subscriber-only access on Tuesday.

Asked how mainstream media covered the election, Malaysiakini’s editor-in-chief Steven Gan said: “I would refrain from criticising my colleagues in mainstream media; they’re trying their best but they are writing in a strict environment.” He added, however, that by not reporting the bad news regarding BN once the information became available, mainstream media was not doing its job.

“We (Malaysiakini) exist because these guys are not doing their proper job,” Gan said.

In the lead-up to the election, three independent activist groups - the Centre for Independent Journalism, the Writers Alliance for Media Independence and Aliran, a reform movement dedicated to justice, freedom and solidarity - set up a Media Monitors’ Diary website (www.aliran.com/elections) on which they published analyses of the mainstream media’s coverage of the election.

The final report will be published on the website next week, but the bias is apparent already.

“I can tell you offhand that the content analysis shows that the mainstream media’s content is in favour of BN,” Ms Venkiteswaran said.

Opposition candidates frustrated by the mainstream media’s bias used blogs as a campaigning tool.

They included Jeff Ooi, the new Jelutong MP, who has become known as Malaysia’s most influential blogger. Even the election’s oldest candidate, Maimum Yusof, 89, had her own blog and Facebook group.

Gan said the influence of the internet on the election has altered Malaysian politics.

“You know, I think that the results were really unprecedented in many ways and the good thing about Malaysia is that although the penetration rate is not very high, as compared (with) Singapore and South Korea, it’s high enough for cyber activists to exploit it.”

He said if the Government continued to make broadband available to all, the internet would play an important role in the years ahead, especially in the context of issues relating to good governance and transparency.

    My list of thanks

To the two journalists who are regulars on this site, you know who you are and so do I, I hear boso is onto you!

To the very helpful guy from the Government Department who had too much to drink at a bar one night and was bragging about his writings on this site, and a special thank you to him for giving out a name of another blogger who he meets with on a regular basis. Vinaka

To the lawyer who thinks he is hiding behind his keyboard, yes YOU think you are smart enough to hide, but your not so friendly colleague has loose lips.

To the failed business men who was under a cloud of suspicion no so long ago, remember people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones, your little chat around the grog bowl last week was enlightening to say the least, and if I was you I WOULD be worried about your past tax issue.

Yes, the internet is a great place, but its your hatred on this site that makes me sick.

  2. ex Fiji Tourist Says:

destiny, the stupidity in your comments suggest that you are none other than bananasinpyjamas himself.

  3. Tebara Says:

Destiny … You are full of shaet …. Your vote of thanks should be written on paper and shoved up your ass where it really belongs. Dont waste your time sitting your fat arse in front of PC trying to scare bloggers away … !! We wont be easily swayed … we shall blog on and expose the patheticness of your kind …!!

A suggestion ..If you are sick … its time to suck your feel good medozz …!! Piggy has your afternoon lolly pills ready for you under his table … once youve taken that ..Im sure u will be easily promoted to a better arvo than once started….

Just remember ..Your days are numbered …. !!

  5. NadroKid Says:

Destiny, for some of us our Joy is in the Lord (as in “the Joy of the Lord is my strength”…not in circumstances nor people. Whether LQ is PM or Bainimarama has illegally taken over makes no difference to how much joy we have. So that quote probably applies only to you. We will however keep on speaking the truth…hopefully in love.
Stop wasting your time being like the Gestapo and KGB trying to listen in and intimidating people. We are on a roll! Come join us. Power to the people!

  6. Adi Kaila Says:

Good to see it makes you sick - covetousness & guilt can do just that - revealing the truth is not hatred - fact is fact & that is that. Hatred is the word you’ve used - that’s what you are full of yourself or you would not have mentioned this word. Very revealing indeed.

This site is all about freedom of speech.

That is the very reason this site exists.

Twisted minds will twist the truth to suit their treacherous agendas - yeah go ahead & spy & dob on people - it’s your destiny to be so pitiful.

That is the very reason this site exists, to protect the Fijian citizens from being bamboozled by the propaganda of the illegal regime & from being physically hurt by them - you’re more than contributing to illegalities & atrocities being committed. You must be one of those ‘no qare’ ‘nothing to contribute to society or anything people’ so jealous of others successes so you will malign them for no reason.

So you get off on others miseries - well karma bounces back with extreme malevolence.

    THE TRUTH WILL PREVAIL

Destinty this place if for all peace, loving people who want palimentary democracy restored in our beloved lands. So if you dont like it here, then bloody get out…..

  10. Mark Manning Says:

So what happens to the President now ?
Will he be arrested for treason or just fired because he’s getting too old to govern , no disrespect intended to an elderly man !
By the way , the Presidency is an Institution , not a person . The person heading that Office , has a legal obligation to follow the rule of law as determined by the Constitution , not by how he may feel on the day or on the advice of a Military Commander .

  11. donplaypuks Says:

This is why the BN govt has got to go. ’sword’ in the quotation is a generic reference to all weapons of oppression, including physical ones such as guns, batons, tear gas, chemically-laced water etc, etc.

So, there is no need for the tautological ‘guns’ after sword. Even then, if you insist on using it, then ‘gun’ would be appropriate.

In 30 years, BN and the NEP have destroyed many things held dear by M’sians, but the massacre of the English language is the one for which they should be strung up!!

  12. ym Says:

Yeap. You can say that again. In our case it was the pencil that marked the cross.

  13. Tebara Says:

MM … The President is quite senile and in progressive stage of dementia and or alzheimers. He shakes and drools quite often. If you find yourself in his presence.. he will be engaging in conversation one minute and totally loosing the plot the next. His money hungry wife keeps to his side at all times wiping away saliva and nodding on his behalf …!! Thats the state of the President .. . Tis a big circus and a joke ..!!

He wont be arrested for treason and trying him will be a waste of money for taxpayers as his lawyer will plead insanity… Yet the old fark is pocketing sweet money at the mo … U go figure.

  14. Mark Manning Says:

I was pondering yesterday , how any-one in Fiji , 40 or 50 years old , has had to endure 4 coups in the last 20 years . And I wondered how difficult , for all , that it must be and have been . I truly felt sad for the men trying to make a living for their families , the women trying to make the household function properly under these very stressful and trying times . My heart goes out to you all . But I’m confident that out of the ashes of this , Fiji’s last coup , that Fijians will come out much stronger . my hope now is though , that you all reflect on your own role throughout the last 4 coups , your own prejudices and faults , and learn to appreciate one another and pick up the pieces and move on to prosperity for all Fijians . You have so much there that the rest of the world have lost and yet you don’t seem to realise that and it’s being destroyed , year by year . Not much of a legacy for your Children ! And what of the 20 and 30 year olds now , will they have to endure the same misery the previous generation has ?

  15. Rourou Says:

Pressie and Bainimarama’s terrorist military must all go to jail…if they are about to die than they can die inside Korovou without a ceremony.

  16. Tui Says:

They say that opinions are like assholes, everyone’s got one! And to be really honest I’m sick of reading the same opinions on here. Sky, right on brother, I hear where you are coming from. Praveen well said, and now for the rest of you.

    1. Get off your backsides and do something positive for this country, hiding behind a blog site is not a JOB it’s an obsession that wastes your valuable time. I have been watching this site for a few weeks and I have to ask myself ‘what the F%^& do that actually makes any difference to the outcome and the cold hard answer to that my friends is NOTHING
    2. You are NOT winning anything you are keeping this country from moving forward
    3. Your obsession with conspiracy theories is laughable.
    4. You harp on about the same rubbish day after day GET A LIFE
    5. And no, I am NOT in the military, nor am in the IG nor am I related to anyone that is the Military or the IG, neither am I sleeping with anyone in the Military or the IG so there goes all your theories about who is writing this blog.

Open your eyes people and get off this useless blog site, go and actually do something that helps move us forward and stop bloody complaining

  24. stiremup Says:

Just a thought if the pen is mightier than the sword why isn’r Russel Hunter PM?

  25. Destiny Says:

Yes well he DOES have a point…

  26. Dauvavana Says:

You want to know why the pen is mightier then the sword. Well here’s a few reasons for you and the illegal government you support:

    1. Fiji is now a pariah state that no tourist wants to come too
    2. No aid from major donors
    3. No visa for all illegal government supporters to US, NZ, Oz
    4. Mahen’s tax evasion exposed

All because we are exposing the truth about these crooks in government straight from our pen/keyboard so these 1st world states reacts

    bahahahahahahaha

  27. Destiny Says:

    Dear Dauvavana
    1. check your facts mate, i tried to book into the Fijian and its booked solid, so are most of the resorts… obviously you dont get out much
    2. Aid is pouring in, BUT do we really want it??? got to ask yourself what strings are attached to so called FREE money
    3. Please, who needs the US.. and NZ is not a destination its a stopover so is Oz.
    4. Sorry but didnt they prove him innocent??
Nice try but as said earlier ‘if the pen is mighter than the sword, why is Russel Hunter PM???
you only believe what you want to believe…

  28. stiremup Says:

    Dauvavana,
Still not sure you are right.
1- Frank is still the PM.
2- Mahen is still the Minister of Finance.
3- Over half a million tourists still come here every year.
4- China has just given more money than the USA EU, NZ and Australia combined so I guess a major donor is still giving money and the others are now quite minor by comparison.

One thing you are right about a few people can’t go to Australia, New Zealand or the USA but I think that has more to do with their respective immigration departments.

so perhaps we can agree and say that an official immigration department stamp is mightier than the sword or the pen.

  29. Dauvavana Says:

Destiny, go read the fijitimes online this evening. Your hero AG had to do the the bidding for the lamusona PM who was to lamu to be cross examined in the courts this week and now too lamu to tell the Fiji Times straight in their face not to publish articles intended for tomorrow that has been leaked to the PM’s Office.

The pen is indeed mightier than the sword.

  30. aubatinuku-N Says:

    China will want collateral folks!
This is the Chinese we’re dealing with here!
Na vanua qase, tautauvaka ga kei India!

  31. stiremup Says:

    aubatinuku-N,
They all want Collateral. did you not know that the EU would only give us aid if Fiji broke ranks with the other island nations and sign up to the EPA. China is no worse than the others. Perhaps you are a racist prefer white people to yellow people.

  32. stiremup Says:

    Bye All,

I’m off out now, I am going off to Traps to see if I can have more luck than Lie. See you there. kiss kiss!

    see you tomorrow.

  33. Destiny Says:

Dauvavana, As i said earlier, i know who you are so please dont make me tell the world. I have never said the AG is my hero so please dont put words in my mouth, lets see who is lamu!

  34. Destiny Says:

aubatinuku-N, you are way behind the 8 ball… here’s a clue, kings road, national stadium… think about it for more than a second… god you are stupid

  35. aubatinuku-N Says:

Iam stupid enough to be on here then reading comments from an equally stupid profess to know it all pomp like you!

I kinda like being behind the 8 ball ;)

  36. Destiny Says:

Ellen Whippy ? Stan Whippy Ritova’s daughter ?

FBC Chairman Daniel Whippy’s cousin ?

    sobo sobo….

  41. Noor Aza Othman Says:

I’ve wrote before the election all over that PAS is double-face. It is only interested in gaining as much ruling power as it can and will say anything to gain that power. It’s a party that is based on racial, religious and ultra-nationalism (of a supreme Islamic nation-state) politics and hence will forever stands in contradiction to a mature and progressive nation-state of truly democratic Malaysia in the future that promotes true equality and liberation for all. I don’t think it’s too late to rectify this grave mistake of having PAS in the Opposition coalition in the first place as I believe if Anwar & Keadilan plus DAP stand firm with their conviction (I applauded Anwar’s and DAP brave stand against NEP); there is great potential for Anwar to intensify the effort of changing the mindset of brainwashed Malays. Especially from the ordinary population; who are still brainwashing into supporting the undemocratic and unjust NEP and “Ketuanan Melayu-Islam” ideology. For many educated Malays, NEP & such racist, sexist and fascist ideology are no more relevant since many have been exposed to liberal and progressive democracy system and human/women’s rights in the west. And they are the ones who might be able to influence their parents or relatives from the rural Malay population particularly. It is worth a try, and why not?

And to also have in mind that UMNO is going to play more dirty in the next election by having “indigenous/bumiputera/Malay” identity as constructed from religion rather than race. This’s the reason for Chandra Muzaffar’s dirty and deceitful outburst against Anwar; in order to prepare the groundwork for enabling Indian Muslims to gain such “indigenous” identity in exchange for loyalty and support for Umno. Whilst their elite-class enrich themselves of course with all the privileges. This is also very dangerous for the opposition as this will enable Umno to buy increase voting support for Umno in the next election. Besides granting citizenship to Muslim migrant workers from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Indonesia, and refugees of Burmese, Filipino and Southern Thai Muslim background including in Sarawak and Sabah, in order to also garner that increase votes and loyalty to Umno (why also the big winning in Sabah and Sarawak for BN). So I fully support the bravest and wisest opposition leader of all, Lim Kit Siang for taking such a firm stand against PAS on the issue of MB Perak’s position. Besides, there you can see how greedy for power and double-face PAS is; they already gain two states of Kedah and Kelantan. Why can’t they back-off and compromise from the Perak MB issue if they’re genuinely co-operating with the coalition partners especially since DAP won the most seats anyway? I never trust PAS and never will; because I’ve grown up and realize true democracy and universal human rights that cuts across race, religion and ultra-nationalism are the greatest rewards for humanity. Particularly in a world dominated by greed, arrogance and selfishness. And as long as the capitalist system and class rules the world and humanity! And male politicians including from the opposition; please do listen and take advise from the women sometimes!

And long live DAP & Keadilan! At least, I could breath again a little bit in this sorry nation-state!

The court-case continues and the more I watch it the more obvious it becomes that the judges are biased, just from their reactions and questions and watching their body language and expressions when the lawyers are speaking. Qarase’s lawyer is excellent and if this were any other country with an untainted judicial system we’d already be celebrating a sure victory…unfortunately in this heavily stacked deck its really looking like another ‘Chaudhary investigation’ farce. However what can’t be denied is that people here are getting more and more pissed off about whats happening. In the beginning people were more quiet and silent because they were afraid, now when the news goes on and people like Baini, Aiyarse and Chodo are shown people are openly swearing at them. Even people who were pro-IG in the beginning are now changing sides because they’re now seeing the reality. In the past 4-5 months I have yet to get into a taxi where the taxi-driver was pro-IG although in the first months after the coup there were a lot who cautiously thought that the coup was a good thing (mostly indian). Now its a different story altogether, people are really starting to curse this useless IG because they see them now for the opportunistic losers who are running the country into the ground. One indian taxi driver spent the whole ride venomously cursing everyone in the IG and army (yes I live a long way from the city and he got to almost everyone), I told him, you better be careful I might be a soldier….he replied, I don’t care brother….if you want to shoot me, then shoot me..but I’m telling the truth! The last words he said, you know when something going to happen, its going to be us gang who suffer, not Chaudhary…he’ll run away with his millions of dollars. And sadly that is the truth…these losers will abandon ship because they’ve got the means, even these loser judges are citizens of other countries…I just hope they get caught before they leave.

@Glawyer - like you I listen very carefully to the opinions of market vendors, taxi drivers and my relatives from the village to try and get a handle on what most of our people think.

I don’t mean to presume I know you, but I feel like most of the people contributing opinions here would stay to rebuild this country no matter how many times they tear it down. Many of us could book and get on the next flight out, but I bet most of us will stay here until waves wash over Fiji.
