Planned youth rally under police scrutiny
05 MAR 2008

A Fiji youth organisation is seeking legal advice to determine whether or not it

needs a permit for a rally in a village hall, outside Suva.

This comes after police had requested the organisers to apply for a permit,

amidst concerns that issues discussed may be against the interim Government.

The Young People Concerned Network (YPCN), a collection of youth activists and

advocates promoting youths’ interests in Fiji, said it had obtained the blessing of

Kalabu chiefs for the usage of its hall for the ‘Gone i Taukei’ (indigenous Fijian)

youth rally, scheduled for this Saturday.

YPCN and the Provincial Youth Forum of the Fiji Islands had organised the rally for

all indigenous Viti Levu youths at the Kalabu village hall, Nasinu to educate youths

on current national issues.

YPCN spokesman Peter Waqavonovono confirmed to Fijilive they had spoken to

their lawyers and was awaiting a response.

He said they needed to clarify whether a permit was required even if a meeting

was to be held in a village and with the permission of its chief.

“We will also be meeting today to discuss whether it’s possible for us to meet at

 the hall because we were

expecting 230 to 260 youths to attend but now our numbers have grown,”

Waqavonovono said.

He said confirmed bookings for spaces at the rally had now reached almost 800.

“We might need to shift the venue to some place bigger like the Civic Centre.

This is where we will really need to obtain a permit,” Waqavonovono said.

“This is an interesting issue to be addressed before the courts because we are under

the impression that a village chief’s blessing was enough to hold a meeting in their village hall.”

A joint statement from the two organisations said the rally would feature leading youth activists

in the area of indigenous rights, human rights, democracy and social justice.

The statement said, after the December 2006 coup, Fiji youths had faced economic and

social consequences ranging from job losses, wage cuts, scholarship losses, travel

bans and human rights abuses.

“Our leaders have failed to consult young indigenous citizens of Fiji of their future

and problems. This will be a rally to cure ignorance and educate youths on

national issues,” it said.

It added: “We as young people of Fiji deserve to have a say in the affairs of

our nation and also be educated on issues that we feel have the ability to hinder

our human rights and spoil our future”.

The statement also assured the interim Government that a non-violent approach

would be maintained at the rally.

This rally is clearly another pathetic attempt to indocrinate Fijian youths with anti-IG sentiments, hoping to incite hatred and vengeful feelings, and I’m sure the backers are desperately hoping to instigate some level of insurrection and chaos.

I plead with the necessary authorities not to issue a permit for this meeting but to urge these ignorant youths to go and farm their lands instead.

Can you believe this? Actually printed in fact for all to see.

Praveen, I could happily support what the Military/Labour Coalition want to do in Fiji if I could believe for a second even that what they say has some degree of truth to it.

As the Commander says in the article below and from his pathetic comments on th eRadion last night, he is about as sincere as a Cane Toad when it comes to taking Fiji forward to anywhere except a beneficial place for him and his cronies…..

Accept What Happened in Dec 06
    Publish date/time: 05/03/2008 [13:15]

Interim Prime Minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama stresses that everyone should just accept what happened in 2006 as it will be a very long journey if people do not accept the events of December 5th takeover.

Bainimarama said the interim government and the military want to have the next polls as soon as possible but those people who are refusing to participate in the People’s Charter process are delaying the elections.

Commodore Bainimarama said those who are opposing the Charter process keep talking about the rule of law but he said everyone can continue debating about the rule of law for a long time.

He stresses that this will not change anything because the interim government is now running the country.

Bainimarama said the decision to accept what has happened and joining the People’s Charter process now lies with the politicians, mainly those from the SDL and the church leaders who continue to oppose the process.

Commodore Bainimarama has also revealed that he met with the SDL President, Ratu Kalokalo Loki a few weeks ago and highlighted to him the SDL Party should be involved in the Charter process.

He said in May 1987 the military carried out the coup because of failed politicians. Bainimarama said the politicians caused instability which led to the coup.

In May 2000, Bainimarama said the coup was staged again because of failed politicians. He said this is the main reason why the military had to move in and assume executive authority.

The Commander said the RFMF then returned the governance of the nation to the politicians however people like Ousted Prime Minister, Laisenia Qarase took Fiji in the wrong direction.

Bainimarama said this shows that politicians are not ready to lead the government.

He stresses that at this stage; no one else apart from the military can protect all the citizens and take the country forward to become a united nation.

Bainimarama said it is clear from what happened in 1987 and 2000 that some chiefs and politicians joined forces to manipulate the indigenous Fijians to grab power.

He said the People’s Charter is part of the Cleanup campaign to ensure that the coup culture also comes to an end.

  5. Praveen Says:

Cauravou…your vile words prove that you have already been brainwashed. But worry not, for there’s a place for you down Reservour Rd, where all that filth in your head can be cleansed.

  6. Dauvavana Says:

    Praveen,

how can their be a place for Cauravou at Reservour road when the military had reserved all the rooms for the iIG, and especially for the Pig

  7. Tui Says:

Good on you Peter. I’m bringing my family to the venue, permit or not. We will be there. This is what we have been waiting for. People, its time to stand up and be counted. Fijians youths of today, qai mai, qai mai gonei, kua na wele. Sa gauna ni toso qo. Kua tale na lomaloma rua. Bind mai ragone, bind mai. Lets see these pufta soldiers try to arrest 800 people!

  8. Praveen's Father Says:

    Praveen sala ghan maro, barchod!!

Stop pestering these people and go finish milking the goat and the bull in front of the mandir idiot.

  9. Tebara Says:

Vinaka Vakalevu to Peter and the rest of Fijian Youth Activist… !! It is about time that we enlighten and educate our Indigenous Youth of today. Your quest is not in vain. For so long have we left our youth stagnate and deprived of social awareness to have the tools that will navigate their tomorrow into a brighter one that they found. What their rights are and how they should better themselves using resources they have.

Youth of today is our future in Fiji tomorrow…

As my favourite motto goes … Leave The World Better Than You Found It !

  10. ex Fiji Tourist Says:

I have just read that the rally has been cancelled because the organizer was threaten and abused by a senior police ‘officer’.

I think it is the same turkey who ordered the arrest of the TV crew at the school and ordered the arrest at night of Mr Khan, even though a magistrate told him that Mr Khan had not broken his bail conditions.

  11. ex Fiji Tourist Says:

Five Fiji Broadcasting Corporation Limited newsroom staff were today summoned to appear before senior military officers..

It was in regards to a story the station had aired yesterday which the military objected..

The Five FBCL Journalists, led by their Acting News Director Ioane Burese, Veteran Journalist Masimeke Latianara and two other senior journalists, Atunaisa Sokomuri and Apakuki Coka were summoned to government buildings this afternoon.

They have been summoned over this report which was aired yesterday in regards to Interim Finance Minister Mahendra Chaudhry.

The report had claimed the military’s 3FIR had wanted Chaudhry removed from cabinet…

After the Radio Fiji staff went in the Commanding Officer of 3 FIR Lt. Colonel Ratu Tevita Roko Ului Mara arrived.

The meeting lasted for half an hour. Burese adds the meeting was cordial and they have been able to clarify what the Military had queried.

Military Spokesperson Lt. Colonel Sitiveni Qiliho says they were able to clarify stories which the radio station had aired.

When this bulletin was prepared, the FBCL CEO Riyaz Sayed Khaiyum said he wasn’t aware of his staff were called for a meeting with the military.

And bananasinpyjamas wants a peaceful Fiji.

  12. natewaprince Says:

Save the Sheep, doesn’t the bastard pig realise that even this coup was backed by failed politicians, ratou vei cai.

Anyway the youth rally has been cancelled .According to there spokesman Petr Waqavonovono,he was abused and threatened by a senior cop who wanted to know the password to their website.

I urge the organisers to seek permission from the Methodist Church to have their meeting at Centenary Church.

Lets see if the pigs have the guts to stop the Bose Vanua.

Qarauni iko Vore, don’t push your luck you bastard.

  13. Tebara Says:

What a shame to continuosly see bullying tactics from the Army and Police. Eventhough this really was of good intention in trying to build for a better tomorrow. I suppose their IQs are substantially lacking as to not see the need to raise awareness in our Youths.

Vore enough of giving public statement. You dont know what the heck you talking about. You of all people are eating the wealth of this country. Stop blaming failures of previous govt officials in why and how you are trying to shape Fiji today. You can command your military with the gun … simple fact is … you speak to them in Fijian and when you do decide to speak in English (mind you Fijis official language ..) Twas A OK … because your subjects were of the same wavelength. Fiji today as you are fast learning has learned men and women who no longer lay dormant whilst waiting for Chiefs and their kind to continuosly milk wealth and money out of their hands. We have a voice and will continue to fight for the freedom of all and will bring to accountability those so called Paramount Chiefs who dwells on their forefathers glory of eating of the land and its people however they like. Naulukau and Ganiarse … Your dynasty has long gone … your wives had better wake up. We dont live in a generation of your fathers and father in laws …

Not suprising your mob is bedding the Chodos of the day … Fact is … Your fijian days are numbered.

  14. Mark Manning Says:

It’s good to se the youth standing up for their rights , it’s their future and it will be their country . I hope that those who have relative in the Military can persuade their family members to see the light and stop supporting these idiots in this regime . Taking Fiji forward ! Forward to what , catastrophe ? You shouldn’t be fearful , right is might and think of the youth who have died , been tortured or detained since this disgusting coup commenced . I think you could silently , amongst yourselves , dedicate this meeting to that young man who was murdered by those cowardly thugs in the Military and Police . I don’t think they’ve even been brought to justice yet , have they ?

  15. ex Fiji Tourist Says:

    No, Mark.

And neither have charges been laid against the military / police / thugs who kicked and bashed Mr Khan 3 months ago, ruining his kidneys in the cowardly attack.

  16. Tui Says:

The rally only postponed for a bigger venue. Apparently more and more people want to attend so we might have to find a venue like the Methodist park in Toorak.
Peter dou kerea na Methodist Church me caka i na park mai Turaki, forgot the name, but you definatley need a bigger venue bro. Just say the word, keimami sa wawa tu qo. Mai ragone! Power to the people!

  17. Tebara Says:

Amen … !! This is a PEACE rally …. !! let the citizens gather in unison as we flock peacefully to the venue.

To the Police if you are reading : Your CoP have publicly stated that he was on a mission to which there was great success .. Fasting and Praying that God will guide you as a unit in how to combat your duties. In saying that, bullying and intimidation is a sign of evil lurking in the midst. I suggest as a unit headed by the CoP to please go back to your altar and seek for devine intervention in dealing humanly to all citizen and diligently going about your duties .. If you know what I mean …. !

To the Army .. As Per your head Vores statement…. This IG is about accountability and transparency. Let the voice of the Youth be heard. Im sure your kind will be there in multitude either publicly or secretly. Hear how the well versed and young leaders of Fiji have to say and in doing so will learn a great deal on Peace, Unity and forging a better tomorrow.

Lets show our Unity… Lets support and bind together in unison as we seek a brighter Fiji.

  18. YPCN2 Says:

SVS – is there a website for Peter’s group YPCN?

If not, there is a group of concerned young people with IT skills that can set up a website for them if they wish.

Does Peter have email we can email him ?

  19. Mark Manning Says:

thanks ex tourist for the info !
There is no way this regime will be going to an election , the moment a government is sworn in , all involved in the coup will be brought to justice and the Commander arrested for either ordering the murder of CRW soldiers in 2000 or being directly involved . I just hope the Police took my advice , 14 months ago and kept a copy of the evidence before Frank stormed the Police compound . You have to stay one step ahead of these criminals .I’d be interested to know if he had that helicopter pilot killed on the 6th of December 2006 , off the west coast ?
As for Mr Kahn , it takes a coward like Frank to beat up an innocent man , that’s 2 citizens from overseas that he has attacked now or deported illegally , it’s only a matter of time before he makes a mistake he won’t recover from . My guess he will have some of the youth roughed up tortured or killed . I hope not . Tell Mr Kahn to hang in there , justice will come for him soon . And i hope Frank and Chaudhry and their families lose everything they have and Mara’s off spring . It would be nice to know if Rabuka is behind this coup too ?

  20. Tagimaucia Says:

    its Furnival Park, Tui :-)

Why do you need a kid like this Peter to get us to gather for an assembly we’ve been long calling for? We could organise one ourselves. What they’re planning is a youth rally. And I do not regard myself a youth – I am an adult. I would like to attend a rally with an adult agenda… adult mentality, etc. I dont think they will have on their agenda what we’ve been addressing on this forum; the way we’ve been addressing it.

Come on guys.. lets get up and get one together ourselves. We dont need this Peter. It seems that we’ve got all the ideas and lets get ourselves motivated and get on with it!

And, as Tui suggested, Furnival Park would be an ideal venue.

Come on IslandBoy, LUVfiji, Dauvavana, NP, AdiK, Tui, BaiKei Viti… are you still awake. Yr thoughts please.

  21. Tebara Says:

FYI Tagimaucia… Peter Waqavonovono is not a kid… Here is a young indigenous man bended together with likeminded young people to raise awareness within the many young indigenous fijian men and women on the current situation in fiji, their role within the society, what is expected of them and more so their social responsibilities today and into the future. If you read carefully, they are calling on all young indigenous fijians for this forum, which was to eventuate in Kalabu but for the ever increase in numbers have to find a more bigger space to accommodate the crowd. It is a peaceful forum and one that is long overdue The courage of these patriotic young men and women are to be commended.

Tribal leaders will not meet: PM
    05 MAR 2008
    ——————————————————————————–

Fiji’s interim Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama says he will not allow a meeting of Fiji’s tribal leaders later next month to take place.

He said any meetings to destabilise the work of his regime will not be tolerated.

“I will not allow it, and the police will not allow it,” Bainimarama said of the planned meeting of Fiji’s 222 tribal leaders being sought by the Viti Landowners and Resources Association (VLRA).

VLRA spokesman Ratu Osea Gavidi told fijilive the meeting is being organised to discuss issues pertinent to indigenous Fijians since the Great Council of Chiefs (currently suspended) is being politicised.

He said the key issue would be land use and how the indigenous Fijians could benefit from their resources.

But, Bainimarama is sceptical and accused Ratu Osea of “trying to mislead the indigenous landowners”.

“We’ll stop such meetings and I urge the chiefs not to follow him,” Bainimarama said.

holy jesus fukin christ… just a few days ago, u dickweeds published an article whereby u called for people to get rid of frank and his men by violent means… which is it? r u fijians always so fukin confused? no wonder the indians always pull the wool/banana leaf over ur eyes…

  24. Soul of Fiji Says:

really!!! GRIM, no wonder we can see Choro a mile away…and smell your shit with it

  25. IslandBoy Says:

Hello Everybody – This is a digression, but I beg leave to post on this thread as its a youth related issue.

Today a very reliable USP source told me Fiji has yet to pay the FJ$41M its supposed to remit as part of its government charter member subsidy to USP. Since taking over our Fin portfolio, MPC has cut this down from the previous FJ$45M. Cos Fiji’s subsidy stands at about 85% of the total USP receives, its is seriously affecting their cash flow.

USP has in turn leaned on Fiji student sponsors like PSC, Fijian Affairs, Multi Ethnioc etc, but in a rare double whammy, MinFin has not paid them either. From their perspective this will seriously affect USP, FIT, overseas scholarship holders etc.

The unofficial observations from MinFin staff to USP and other stakeholder agencies goes something like, “why do you think because it’s stated in the budget, the money is in the Bank.” A possibility is that some of it may have been directed to the IGs other pet project – University of the Sugar City. I wonder what Cassandra has to say, would really appreciate her insight into the budgetary implicaions of this move.

At this point FB has to ask serious questions about MPC’s fiscal management abilities on a national scale. Taken together with Wadan Narsey’s piece on declining remittances on Fiji One news, this is serious. If MPC is doing this out of spite, its counter-productive on two fronts:

    1. we could well do with the money USP generates in the local economy and for the amount of subisdy we pay, apart from an educated population it would be interesting to learn just how much we get back from USP in terms of local expenditure;

    2. it will just increase the number of international agencies doubting the IGs ability to meet its financial comitments.

Hopefully some journalist will read this and run with it in the mainstream media.

@ Tagimaucia – was invited to a meeting and will finalise a local conference proposal very soon. Its legit so they can’t object and they will be invited too. How do I get the SV editors to send invitations in all your real names? Not that I don’t think you’re a big gorgeous blossom!

  26. Tui Says:

@Tagimaucia, Vosoti au Adi Senikau mai Ca’au. Been away too long and forgetting places like Furnival park.
I think what Peter has done is the catalyst for us older folks to put something together. Problem is we really cannot do much because of the freedom we have been enjoying as bloggers. Either we continue anonymously or we come out in the open. Right now that is not a good option. I did try to organize a prayer meeting in Sukuna Park in the days of RFC and WFC. I told people to wear white so we could see what the support was like. Not many people turned up but anyway on the designated day the Police and Military had organized some open day for the Ministry of Health. Obviously there was a heavy police presence in Sukuna Park that day. Proof, that they log into our blogs every hour of the day.
I’m not sure if we should be discussing our strategies in the open here but maybe if we wore an agreed t-shirt color and or armband or something, we could meet at the youth rally and maybe take it from there. Having said that we must not let our guards down and let our selves trapped in risky situations. I’m all ears and open to suggestions guys, but my feeling is eventually we will have to come out in the open to take things to another level. Stay safe and focused.
    Io sa dri yani.

  27. Mark Manning Says:

    okay boys,calm down .
It would be fair to say it’s like watching a game of tennis where no one ever wins ! It’s frustrating to be in the wings waiting for Fijians to take their own destiny into their own hands . I mean there are only 3,000 in the military and some of them didn’t want to March into in December 2006 and so stayed away ! Of the 6,000 reservists , only 600 turned up ! So why are you all afraid of Lunatic Frank and a handful of cowards when over 5,000 soldiers don’t even agree with him . Take Frank , Driti and Teleni out , and the rest will fold like a deck of cards and throw that bloody useless President into gaol while your there . To me , I’d say that the Chiefly system in Fiji is coming to an end . None of them have shown leadership . Fiji society has changed forever , let’s hope in the long run , it will be for the better . Yes , let the youth have their say and the older generation need to crucify Frank , Driti , Teleni , Chaudhry that useless interim A G and the rest of the cowards in the IG and their supporters throughout the Fijian community . Indigenous and Indian .

  28. Tui Says:

Island boy, there will be some interesting times ahead for USP. Heard that there will be some big re-structuring and job losses! My source from inside USP told me about the VC-saga before it came out in the local media, so I kinda feel that this time around she could be right again! So USP staff union, get off your backside and do some work for once! Anyway, what’s this I hear about the “Indian Mafia” in the Faculty of Science? Seems like they ganging up on white expatriate staff. Hate to sound racist here but maybe that bald headed dude in Registrar’s Office could enlighten us on the goings on in the Science Faculty.
Ah well another beautiful day has come and gone in paradise. Watch the news tonite at ten. Bless.

  29. IslandBoy Says:

Sorry folks – really using up my credits this pm, but could not resist asking you all if you saw the naked hotel warrior on TV news this evening.

I laughed my black ass off the chain thinking of his pious illegitimate pseudo intellectual big business pronouncements sitting at the boardroom table, compared to him charging around a Chinese hotel corridoor with security guards trying to subdue him and his dudu moto. What a fuckwit – and he probabaly thinks none of us know and therefore his credibility is still intact

Calling on volunteers – me vakasilimi mada – rua ga na boro dreu damu, qai mai sosomaki yani vakamalua, me kila kina na ca ni murimuri yalewa qase.

  30. Peace Pipe Says:

What a scoop. The Qarase challenge to the illegal ig has started and Qarase’s legal counsels have fired off high powered volleys that would blast the bipolar off to the moon. And who is afraid this time? None other than the bipolar pig himself. An absolute coward. I think this case will be his undoing. He has refused to take the witness stand. They should serve him a summons and if he still refuses then arrest him for contempt.

A very pertinent point I overheard in the QC’s submission which I think we could all contribute towards very effectively. It was mentioned that the ig is in control and that the reason they remain in power is that they have been accepted by the people. We must demonstrate in no uncertain terms now while the court is in procession that the majority of the country do not accept the ig. We must bring this to the attention of that court by our actions or statements. Lets quickly think up something to this effect. Time is of the essence cause if we delay just a bit we could miss the boat. I think the Bose and the rally are some good staging points.

  31. Fiji my Fiji....kaiviti dina Says:

To you GRIM or GRIND please stop saying the Lords name in vain.. why you have to swear in his name….stop please,it really doesnt sound good to us christian..I believe!!!!!!

  32. Budh.au Says:

Peter Waqavonovono, Why don’t we hold the meeting in Vunidawa,Lomaivuna or Serea? I’ll pay for 5 to 6 Buses to transport people to the venue from locations in Suva and Nausori. Lets do it!

  33. Budhau Says:

In that discussion between Tui and Islandboy, someone mentioned the “Indian Mafia” at USP pissing of the White expats – Hey maybe it these guys who had pissed off Professor Davies – that could explain why the good professor has been pissed of the Indians since.

The Qarase case – the IG does not have a chance, however, this might have to go up to the high court before Mr Qarase prevails. And then what….FB is going to sack the high court and abrogate the constitution.

….didn’t I tell you guys that the Military council would soon realize that Chaudary ain’t Mr Fix-it-all, and that what will end his stint with the IG – however, Chaudary, being who he is – he ain’t gonna be fired, he will leave to prepare for the next election.

  34. Tagimaucia Says:

@IB. Good on you! Its time that we get something off the ground. The wind of change is blowing (not only in the US) but right here, and its in our favour. Lets make the most of it!

Gonei.. o cei tale e via raica na mua-i-muri nei koya qori? Kena lekaleka ga me kau yani i Korovou; and set them loose on him. LOL !!

@Budhau… yes, you are right. So it is a game of wait-n-see from now on, ha??

  35. Budhau Says:

Hey guys, why bother with the march, good it was cancelled – remember Russell Hunter was talking about them BIG Fijians in the army, well guess what, those guys are pretty frustrated and they would love an opportunity to go kick some ass – so why give them this opportunity.

This regime is falling apart, let them hang themselves – why give them the satisfaction of letting them vent their frustration on some poor local folks.

..and that money earmarked for USP – that has gone to the University of Indos, Lautoka….right?

  36. Jean d’Ark Says:

The march wasn’t cancelled Budhau, it was postponed! And who gives a rat’s about those big guys – sooner or later we’ll have to stand up to them because we can’t go on like this forever. As the Midnight Oil song says – it’s better to die on your feet than to live on your knees!

As for court case – it is already in the High Court. But you can’t blame Frank’s unspoken threats to abrogate the Constitution on anyone else but him. Moreover, that step is not so simple or straight-forward as you and the military are trying to bluff out. For a start, let’s just see how Frank proposes to contrive a “better Fiji”, or acceptance within the international community and the UN, after that? No – he will just be painting himself even further into his current dead-end corner if he tries that!

  37. Lau Lass Says:

the IG allocated $1.76m to the Uni. of India in Lautoka, when the Uni. is registered under a company, and not thru the process of a charter which is the case with USP. We can smell that something stinks with this Uni. & the people behind it like Kamlesh Arya, Pathik, the former USP VC,chandra, Satyanand, FIT Director (stolen post) & now they are going to turn Samabula DAV to be their Uni. of India – Suva. How can the govt give them $1.7m when the Uni. is not officially registered??? This is what they do in India!!!

  38. LUVfiji Says:

@Lau Lass.. just a minor correction.

Chandra never got the post of VC at USP (only in acting capacity besides dreaming about it) which is exactly why he’s at Uni of fiji now. The island member countries probably could not bear to see him at the helm of their institution.

    Baleta… ? Different colour !

Yes the Suva campus will then be named after Miss Piggy !
