I am told that the bomb scare cut short Dr Biman Prasad’s “dressing down” of Fiji’s post-coup economy. But it was already pretty clear even by that stage of the Prasad presentation that Chaudhry and the IG have been significantly overestimating both the economy, and their own abilities to manage it!
Prasad was apparently still questioning the RBF’s economic forecasts for 2008. As a guideline, he pointed out the 2007 forecasts which started out at -3.0%; and was then revised mid-year to -3.5%; and then declared at the 2008 Budget presentation to be -3.9%. But tellingly, Prasad predicted that as last pieces of data for 2007 dribble in, he is predicting the final economic “slowdown” figure to finish up at greater than even -4.0%.
That is a real slap in the face for Mahen’s alleged economic management and leadership credentials – especially after the 2000 IG already showed him how to revive an economy in short order. This really puts his constant criticism and fault-finding of all the Kubuabola budgets into a more accurate perspective.
Moreover, Prasad stated that although the post-coup economic decline had finally now “bottomed out”, he went on to claim that the economic “re-growth” bounce predicted by the RBF for 2008 had not yet begun! And nor was there much indication that it would or could begin absent the Government fiscal intervention that Mahen is effectively ruling out by his amateur and pig-headed insistence on keeping Government Spending at within 2% more than Revenues. The reason given by Prasad for doubting the RBF growth forecasts, was his industry-by-industry analysis of growth prospects in Fiji’s main economic sub-sectors. Sugar, Tourism, Fishing, Remittances, Gold, Timber, Services, Construction etc. were all down or flat, with little chance of growth or increased exports! So where then would the alleged 2.2% 2008 growth come from?
The big “party pooper” according to Prasad was Sugar, where Prasad pointed out that EVEN if the IG managed by some miracle to solve the land, production and restructure problems without the EU’s $200 million, there was one dynamic which no-one was even addressing, but which would still single-handedly torpedo all of Mahen’s Sugar hopes and plans. And that was the fact that all over Fiji, farmers (both Fijian and Indian) are voting with their feet, and either leaving Sugar for cash crops, or simply leaving farming altogether. In the past, son’s could normally be relied upon to follow their fathers into farming, but now this is simply no longer the case in Fiji. Prasad pointed out that since this was a Fiji-wide AND worldwide trend, it was difficult to imagine it being reversed this year or ever, regardless of CBUL or leases or mill repairs! Not that Sugar is doomed, but just that it is in inevitable right-sizing contraction that will mean a lot of wasted money if the exact “right-size” is not properly anticipated.
This means that there is a whole s..tload of unavoidable political fallout in store for Mahen, the FLP and the Regime as these economic chickens continue to come home to roost over the coming pre-election year. How long can Frank & Mahen continue to stave those political consequences off with their usual political grandstanding to Indo-Fijian interests and sensibilities? And then how will they entice broader participation into the NCBBF/Charter if they chose that usual path of ethno-partisan grand-standing again?
Make no mistake people – the squeeze of cold, hard reality is slowly contracting around the Regime. And they know it, too!
And so in what is potentially a bomb-shell rumour, I hear that Parmesh Chand “walked out” of the PM’s ministry office very recently. The way the story was related, the implication of “walked out” was that he’s gone for good. Apparently his wife in NZ is very sick, and Parmesh now just wants to leave all the controversy, heartache and tribulation of his current job to be with her indefinitely. The fact that we haven’t heard any comments from Parmesh on anything recently, especially when specifically asked to give Government’s response to recent news items, could mean something is indeed up. Apparently those in the know amongst the Regime’s “fixers” are frantically trying to conceal the defection and cook up some kind of cover story. Truth be told, this sounds just too good to be true! I also have not heard any independent confirmation of the details, or whatever else may have gone on. But whatever the truth is, it will come out sooner or later in some way or other.

Apparently the jaddoo aimed at Nazi Ali malfunctioned and ended up on Pramesh’s wife
Such is life in ROFTI

Exactly ..agree with article above.I’ve mentioned this before….The coming world wide recession (following the US sub prime loan crisis & and the ensuing US economic collapse) makes any optimism for our growth hard to understand, as worldwide economies contract. As such any growth in our exports will be curtailed. Prices will be affected as well, as other economies will emabrk on survival measures to keep their economies afloat..thereby curtailing demands for goods and sertvices from other countries including Fiji. This will affect our tourism industry first which this iIG seems to be pinning its hope for growth on, etc…Together with the iIG caused economic contraction (first the coup, mass dismissal, PSC redundancies, etc… the future prospect for growth may be an elusive dream. Looks like Chodo has run out of ideas …and most likely he will resort to increasing taxation ( like what FirCA is doing..taxing mobile phone usage as a fringe nbenefit etc..) ..& watch for the next budget..may be more taxation for personal income and businesses..which will contract the economy further. They will bankrupt this economy the way they are going. The army people may doing okay in these hard times as they are using LOp’s and vouchers from FMF kitchen etc.. to fund their personal family groceries while the people suffer.
February 6, 2008 at 2:14 pm
The pig did a very dangerous thing when he quoted bible verses to support his illegal regime in the news..he also said that now people have realised the truth behind his illegal takeover and have supported his ig.
I for one doesn’t know where his supporters are coming from.
He also said in the news that some business ppl called him to open a bank account for cyclone victim rehab.
AH! sa tu tale na da..Last time some business ppl asked him to stage the coup, now business ppl to open bank acc.
Sa qai matata ga mai, sa mata i lelevu tale ga..ha-ha-ha.
What’s up FICAC, what’s cooking.
Pramesh has been quiet for sometime now.
February 6, 2008 at 2:29 pm
Dr Biman Prasad is basing his bleak views on Fiji’s economy on facts but Maiya Chodo is giving the impression that the economy is functioning well and on the road to recovery based on false figures. This is what he had been doing in the past but which his Indian supporters chose not to see. They instead saw him as their saviour.
I am telling you Indians to abandon that bastard. He is finished. You wait after a democratic govt is in place then we will deal with this arrogant piece of shit!!
February 6, 2008 at 4:21 pm
Maqa a Leqa,
Your call for the Indian communities to abandoned Mahen Chodo is falling on deaf ears. The Indian community in Fiji is facing another test of their commitment to securing lasting Peace and racial harmony in Fiji. They have continued to push their own agendas over the years for political control and domination and as such, it may not be easy to ascertain what impact these economic gloom highlighted by Dr Prasad will have on them[especially the ignorant ones who see Chaudhry as their Saviour in their quest for political control and domination over the Taukeis.
In my view, Mahen still very much remains a hero to most of them [at least with their FLP Party]. With his success in controlling the Fijian dominated military through Bainimarama, there are all the signs that he is still a force to reckon with come the next General Election.
Lets not count our chicks before the eggs are hatched, but instead work very hard in dealing with the current disintergrated Fijian Unity- starting within those self serving interste fighters within Army itself.
The Security of our Nation very much is tied to the abilities of the Taukeis to form a formidable front in maintaining our Peace for and amongst one another. Mahen has been succesfully doing that for the Indian communities through his Fiji Labour Party.
God Help Us!!!!.
February 6, 2008 at 5:01 pm
One thing is obvious from this coup. The future for Fijians is not hoping for through the goodwill and common sense from other communities and other countries. Their future lies in becoming at the top of everything in this country & overwhelming others in every sphere of life. Total absolute domination. Multiracialism and appeasement do not work and is counter productive as we have witnessed in this coup. The reality out there is to dominate or be dominated.
February 6, 2008 at 6:44 pm
Yes the gloomy economic predictions have come true and its even worse than they thought. Thats through the lousy economic recovery policies of Chodo. It seems as if he is deliberately taking this course to ruin the economy. This man knows nothing about economy as we see him trying to run the country like he is running a dairy shop. He trying to save money or even make a profit at the loss of the workers and citizens through reduced pay and crumbling infrastructures. That the sure way to repel investors. And I find it amusing that the RBF is forcasting a growth of slightly over 2%. The way things are going we will get that growth figure. Everywhere is showing huge losses like the FSC’s $14m loss. The lame excuse for FSC was that at this time there are lots of expenditure to prepare for the mills’ restart. How come this wasn’t the same last year. You can’t fool people with bullshit excuses we are grown ups and have greater discerning ability than they think. We need one big “cyclone” to clean these idiots in the illegal IG out for good.
February 6, 2008 at 9:04 pm
Kaiwai….can you provide us with the Bible verse the PIG quoted …
February 6, 2008 at 10:04 pm
I have just read a great post on Fiji Times
“Sauleca of 3FIR (7 minutes ago)
I am a career soldier in the FMF.I want to inform the public that not every soldier agrees with the Commander and his direction. We see up in the barracks that the commander has been corrupted by the FLP.We do not agree with him on siding with any political party to conduct a coup.
The bomb threat is nothing new because it is used by Ops on the command from the top to disrupt any event that will give credit to the Mil Command’s enemies. There were many bomb threats in 2000, 2001 and all carried out by certain soldiers on a command.
Most soldiers are fed up with the direction of the military. Our families , relatives and the citizens of Fiji are the ones suffering and in turn we suffer.Every body in Fiji is suffering because of a misguidance by those in command and in the IG.
All the OR’s and many officers are daily discussing the possibility of returning the country to the people to end this abuse. Many soldiers want to return to normal duties.
I am a real soldier and always known for my outspoken views up at camp. I urge the public to be patient and look out for more posts as we negotiate with the bosses about our requests.I urge those in command to ask God for repentance for those who have suffered and died during this coup.No coup is worth the life of a citizen and the command must start to reverse all these actions that have hurt Fiji.
Those politicians who are supporting this coup should step down because the time has come when the soldiers have a change of heart. Most of us are Chistians,we belong to a respected Yavusa and we are also loyal citizens.
I warn Commander not to go back on his word of next years election or there will be serious consequences among the ranks.Forgive your enemies Commander because that is the mark of a real Christian and Fijian.Oqo na gainisala e dodoni, savasava ka dina.Kena levu saka”

Boy, the above letter is encouraging to read. Not many soliders can be brave enough to speak out like Mr Sauleca. We had seen the likes of Major Baledrokadroka, Major Vatu, Major Caucau and many more senior officers have left the army because of its leadership and the course its taking now. It is clear that the Army as a respected institution have moved away from their oath of allegience and their real call of duty which they are know for. They have totally lost their way. the letter again proves the rummours we have being hearing all along that all is not well up there in Delainabua. Not everyone in the Army agree with Frank. We should thank Sauleca who is a REAL solider for his honesty in expressing his views and letting it known to the public. .

Ex Fiji Tourist, where about in the Fiji Times was this posted on?
February 7, 2008 at 2:32 am
It’s time for the interim circus to wind up the show. It’s is repetitive, boring, nonsensical, and beyond repair. The amusement and gratification is only amongst the performers who wrote the plot and the script (and continue to modify it). The actors play without auditioning. Once again the RFMF has been used by the perpetrators.
To the rest of us, it’s a great tragedy we are forced to watch. Cannot they understand that Fiji is crying!
Pessimistic and a bad review one might argue; my oath yes!
But there may be hope, as they say, It’s never over until the fat lady sings.
Na dodonu, savasava, kei na dina me laurai mada i liu mai delainabua kei Berkley Crescent. Sa tagi ko Viti!

To Soul of Fiji: The Bible verse is John 8:32
The you’ll know the truth and the truth shall set you free.
February 7, 2008 at 8:37 am
Yadra people. An encouraging piece there from Sauleca. Just wish more of his kind will speak out. Saw the news yesterday about roads being washed and people having been forced to walk for miles before taking a bus. Most of those interviewed were cane Indian farmers in the West. These are the power bases of the FLP. What we we see before our eyes is the “kudru nu vanua”. The land is not happy with what is going on. Fijian people are suffering and crying out for help. Everyday I drive to work I’m always reminded of how miserable most people in Fiji are. If I for once forget, the potholes on our roads are a constant reminder. This nation is going to the dogs. We have toy soldiers who “play cowboys” with real people, real situations which now make our nation the laughing stock of the region. We act like little children when we don’t like hearing the truth. We threaten people with bomb threats, death threats and we burn their homes if they are too critical of our style of leadership. This nation has become a playground of murders, covetous and uncaring wannabe unelected leaders. Whatever little education they possess, has only been used for their own selfish gain. Mark my words people, these unusual cyclones and rainy weather will only get worse. I hope this evil regime will realize the big mistake they have committed and the dangerous path this country is taking. There will be mass murder if this continues! I pray we will not suffer for too long.
February 7, 2008 at 8:40 am
The general election in 2009 will definately happen! Rain or Shine it will happen, should happen, must happen or else? this is the way we’ve told Bainimarama. Either an election or we will make it happen? Sorry Ladies and Gentlemen but thats the way its going to be! If Bai decided to change his mind at the very last minute than that would be the last and final decision he’ll ever make?Looking forward to fantastic and healthy 2009.

Deeper issues
A military coup is always illegal in a democratic society.
That is because the basis of government is the general election or the general will of the people.
The use of arms to overthrow an elected government is therefore an anathema. Anyone who says otherwise is either ignorant, intellectually dishonest or wilfully blind.
The doctrine of necessity should be known to people who read the Chandrika Prasad judgment of the Court of Appeal after George Speight’s attempted coup.
The doctrine of necessity was then endorsed to legally cover the acts of the late President, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, against a terrorist and unlawful third party the hostage takers.
The affidavits deposed for that matter are telling.
Mahendra Chaudhry, who was then lawful prime minister, requested elections.
Commodore Bainimarama could not guarantee security if the People’s Coalition government was returned.
And Ratu Josefa Iloilo refused to entertain the request of the majority in Parliament behind Dr Tupeni Baba. Had Mr Chaudhry, Commodore Bainimarama and Ratu Iloilo acted in good faith, the interim regime would not have carried on to become the SDL party.
The SDL party was facilitated at birth by the actions of Mr Chaudhry, Commodore Bainimarama and Ratu Iloilo.
All complaints about the past seven years should be directed to them first.
In contrast to 2000, on December 5, 2006 there were no terrorist or unlawful third parties intimidating the President.
There was the elected government and there was the military. The latter trashed their oaths, spat on the Constitution and usurped the elected government end of story.
As for the reprehensible or “racist policies” of the SDL government, the 1997 Constitution outlaws such policies becoming law.
If certain politicians and lawyers felt so strongly and genuinely about it, their duty under the rule of law was to take the matter up in Parliament and in court.
The court can look at the merits of legislation inter alia the Constitution.
Contrary to the reported opinion of a judge at the A-G’s conference, the courts are not bound only to the remedy of judicial review.
The courts can and have struck down legislation which is unconstitutional on the merits the Boilermakers principle.
I have publicly said and it is well known to many that I was never in support of the SDL party.
Before reaching 30 years of age I stood for parliamentary elections against the SDL in 2001 simply to register my objection to them and their policies.
That is my entitlement under the Constitution to differ in my political views but I never let such differences in opinion obscure my view about the value of democracy and rule of law.
I never once took any political disappointment or tragedy personally and go behind closed doors to plan a coup. I never will.
Once we justify December 5, 2006 we justify future coups on a loose interpretation of the doctrine of necessity.
What if the tables turn and extremists use the doctrine to justify genocide in order to preserve their identity or native land?
What do we tell them when hitherto perfectly reasonable people now endorse a military coup as a matter of necessity?
I have heard many coup supporters talking about the “deeper issues” behind December 5, 2006.
There can be no deeper issue than the dismantling of the rule of law and democracy in Fiji.
Those two tangibles bring peace, stability and good governance. I concede there is no perfection. There never is.
Take for example the government of John Howard in Australia. It certainly appeared to lack the moral high ground on aspects of its immigration and foreign policies but no Australian soldier dreams of deposing his or her government.
When the time was right, the Australian voters changed their government.
The people of Fiji have shown their capacity to vote governments out. In 1977, 1987 and 1999.
With the exception of the National Federation Party, why is it that whenever one side of politics loses control of Parliament in Fiji, they forget about their pivotal role as the opposition and go into planning a military coup? Aided and abetted by people trained in the law? We have come a full circle in this country.
The Labour party that held the moral high ground has supported a military coup.
Does it now mean that military takeovers are acceptable to 90 per cent of the population?
For the sake of this country, especially the children and unborn generations, I just hope that one day a Laisenia Qarase will graciously concede defeat at the polls and a Mahendra Chaudhry will graciously thank his competitor or vice versa.
And the wheels of democracy will turn ever so smoothly in Fiji too.
But for that to happen, we must learn from 1987, 2000 and 2006.
A coup is a coup.
It is unlawful, economically disastrous, morally wrong and corrupting.
There are no “deeper issues”.
Tupou Draunidalo
Nadi
Thank you Tupou, couldn’t be better! You summed it up beautifully. Keep fighting on folks.
These are the sort of things, we need to let the younger generation know.
February 7, 2008 at 8:55 am
And pray Col Tomu how will this happen when you have the elections office personnel running around like headless toa, ground preparation’s non-existant, and electoral commission not representing the i-taukei ? NOT TO MENTION THE POLITICAL APARTIES NOT ALLOWED TO CAMPAIGN, in case they say something “inciteful”. Pah !
It will be a shambles if it goes ahead, so my prediction is it wont go ahead becos at the last minutes dickhead will say, oh sorry we not ready !
At that time I will tell you – told u so !
February 7, 2008 at 9:08 am
vinaka, Tupou for your article, we the Fijians need people like you to lead us & save us from this NARCISSIST – Vore the PIG!!!
February 7, 2008 at 9:37 am
“The military council feels strongly that convicted people should not stand for elections,” explains army Legal Director Colonel Mohammed Aziz.
I wonder if he has discussed this with chaudrhy, the convicted deadly driver.
February 7, 2008 at 9:40 am
pramesh Chand & others in iIG must know by now that the boat is at the point of no return and is sinking very fast…time to jump or he will be caught in it…but thing is wherever they will be in the world we will get them & bring them back to face to justice.
February 7, 2008 at 9:41 am
Pusiloa,
The letter I quoted was on the “your comments’ section of yesterday’s paper.
I don’t know if they are available from their archives.
February 7, 2008 at 10:37 am
Col Tomu & others…why do’nt you do to Voreqe what he did to an elected government before the coup…threatening him publically, issuing statements to the effect of your comments above etc.. so we know you are genuine etc…right now..you are all the same. Just like SR or a blogger that goes by a similar name; you are playing a similar game but only this time your approach is diffreent. You will face the full brunt of the law when the time comes. No two ways about it.
February 7, 2008 at 11:10 am
Agree with you El Dorado…..If you cant do that, than I’m sorry, but youre still one of them….
February 7, 2008 at 11:17 am
donu vinaka El Dorado.
whose these aresholes in the military kidding?? Col Tomu or Sauleca of 3FIR could be just Ali or some pro-military blogger.
I really would like to believe these comments but with all the lies & bullshit coming from the military whats the truth anymore. like El Dorado says: come out in the open & oppose ur fucken leader.
why the hell did u pricks created this mess in the 1st place. the economy was doing very well despite the corruption u say existed [prove ur accusations or the military will be sued for defamation] whose going to pay for the costs – yes we the taxpayers.
no no no way….whether this coup ends properly or worse …. u military ppl and the indians will pay for this mess for the rest of ur miserable life. not physically but mentally, socially, financially, etc.
this time around fijians will come back much prepared, focused & speak very loud thru our actions.
stay focused ppl….don’t be swayed with this pshychological messages. the cowardo Vore & his men will pay.
February 7, 2008 at 6:44 pm
Kaiwai…maybe he was referring to his truth which we all know is bullshit, maybe it is the only Bible verse he ever knew.
Here is what the Bible say about the origin of EVIL (reminds us of some people we know!!!)
Matt 13:24-28; An enemy of GOD and man, sows evil seeds in the field of the world.
Ezek 28:12-17; Lucifer was once a beautiful angel created by GOD with freedom of choice whose PRIDE led him to REBEL.
Isa 14:12-14; Lucifer desired to EXALT his throne above GOD’s. He DESIRED TO MAKE LAWS rather than OBSERVE THEM.
Even Satan quoted from the Bible when he tempted Jesus (after Jesus baptism and fasting in the wilderness) the 2nd temptation and he quoted the same line Jesus used:
Matt 4:6 If you are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is WRITTEN:…
Here you will find even the devil (PIG & the IG) will try and quote from the Bible to justify his (their) actions or tempt people into believing that he (they are) is the real deal.
February 7, 2008 at 8:20 pm
TRUTH – Bainipuaka would not know what the TRUTH was even it it fell on him and slapped him about the face – in fact I don’t know how he can even sleep straight at night, he is soooooo crooked in the brain and in the soul.
May God have MERCY on your soul —– maybe.
February 8, 2008 at 9:16 am
These brainless soldiers are all the same, they are all quiet because they have been given money, houses & even cars. You see their houses going up overnight & you wonder???? 4 wheel drives, SHAME on you soldiers, wives & children !!!! eating from HITLER’s hand!!
